One of the questions we are often asked is whether to go with a wired network or a wireless one? Our answer may surprise you. Both. Each has their own strengths and weaknesses. Wired networks a definitely are more secure. They are less likely to be hacked or otherwise attacked. Another advantage of wired over wireless is speed. Ethernet (copper) cable is now capable of speeds in excess of 1024 Mbs (Megabits per second) where as the fastest commercially available wireless (at the time of this writing) is 300 Mbs (Megabits per second).
Wireless does have it’s advantages as well. The most obvious, as the name suggests, is no wires. Well almost no wires. The internet connection itself is usually wired and is distributed wirelessly through a router. The convenience of being able to connect without a bunch of cables involved is very appealing. There is also pretty decent security involved, it just is not perfect, having said that wired is also not perfect but it is better than wireless.
Generally speaking we recommend that a wired network is the primary method of communicating on the network with a wireless component in effect for those in the office or that come in as visitors that have laptops.
